“The Old Tyne Bridge” (STG 144). This is a 7* rarity in the Sprake Darby reference book, and this copy is in immaculate condition. Both the mount and the silk are perfect. Stevens pictured only three bridges – this, The Forth Road Bridge (3 variants), and The Clifton Suspension Bridge. Registered on 22 April 1887. It is most probable that this was produced at the 1887 Newcastle upon Tyne Exhibition where Stevens took his looms, for local rather than national sale. The mount is of the D type with the added detail of the Registration to left and right of the sub-title. The back label is the 21+17+2 variation – a rare label that further dates the piece to 1887. Godden states that the title does not appear printed on the standard back labels – so we can add this to the knowledge data base that it certainly did. Please compare it with the Grant version produced at the same Exhibition and also available.
