“The Late Fred Archer” (STG 22) in the all scarlet colours of Mr Manton (pseudonym for the Duchess of Montrose, women not being permitted to run horses). Not only is this a 3* rarity within the Sprake/Darby reference, but due to the colours it is hard to find with such vibrancy. On the back is the printed label of his career, including his death, which dates the series of these portraits to late 1886. However, the C2 mount variant appeared within the 1887-98 period, so late 1880s seems the most likely production date for this item. A really good example of this well coloured image.
