A wonderful set of stacking boxes with the label “T Barton Late Nye, Manufacturer, Mount Ephraim and Parade, Tunbridge Wells.” There are 17 in the set, the first being of stickware design in the top with the remainder applied decoration as expected. They are all in excellent condition and open right down to the smallest, assuming we have the nerve to do so without fear of dropping a top!. It is unusual to find such an extensive set, and in such a good state. This decorated whitewood is earlier than later tessellated wares and much rarer, but the mix here indicates the dating of this piece to be transitional. The label is a circular version of that in the Austen reference page 136, and as Nye died in 1863 it could be assumed this piece would be dated shortly thereafter.
