This very pretty turned lignum vitae string holder has a screw top over cylidrical base, the bottom of which displays a plain foot. The wood has the expected pulls with age, and these slight and natural features can be clearly seen in the photographs. The markings are really beautiful, and the wood colour is rich. A hard and durable wood, it was used for many purposes that required density and strength. Man made products have thankfully taken over where this natural material was used, so where it was an endangered species it is now recovering. Well known to sink in water, this much traded wood is also self-lubricating, therefore used in early clocks. A very decorative and useful object.
