“Gainst Wind & Steam” by WH Grant & Co. Godden has much detail relating to Grant in his reference book, and this item is referred to on page 447. This and number 939 are companion silks. 939 is a two funnelled river paddle steamer passing a small tug. There are mountains in the background and it was issued both as a picture and on a smaller scale in postcard form. 940 – this item – is a two funnelled ocean steamer with sails set. Both the Stars & Stripes and British Ensign are flying. This silk is in good condition, the mount also. The trade label au verso has the retail details of the shop, and this dates the piece to 1887. There is a picture of this label on page 425. An unusual and pleasing Grant subject.
