Stevengraph of “For Life or Death – Heroism on Land” (STG 189) one of two fire engine scenes, this being the earlier of the two with the older fire appliance and the four horses. Note the outrider on the fifth horse and the burning building on the left, their destination. The mount is the B type used from the York Exhibition to 1888. The trade label is the 19 title variant when this image was first applied to it, therefore dating it to 1881. A two star rarity (out of seven) in the Sprake Darby reference book. Unframed this is an attractive picture, forming a pair with STG 179 “Called to the Rescue – Heroism at Sea”. The colours of the silk are outstanding, and the mount is clean and very good.
