Called to the Rescue with unrecorded Back Label

“Called to the Rescue” sub-titled “Heroism at Sea” (STG 179), a lifeboat rescue scene. It forms a pair with “For Life or Death – Heroism on Land” (fire engine scenes). The colour of the crew’s clothing changes in various copies of this picture. A one-star rarity in the Sprake & Darby book on Stevengraphs, this one showing excellent colouring, good mount and overall condition. Unframed within a B type mount used after the close of the York Exhibition from 31 October 1879 to 1886. The label is most interesting. I appreciate we don’t necessarily buy these lovely silks for the label! However, in the Godden reference page 109 he addresses “Foreign Labels”. They are deemed very rare, but this is an English label. The listing is similar to Stevens’, but the top block of listing has nothing to do with Stevens, only the second block with the clear Stevengraph heading. The retailer is C. Satchwell as per the oval stamp bottom right. The address is 8 Baynes Court, 25 Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell. An additional ink stamp adds the two titles now available of Baseball Match and Mersey Tunnel Railway. Additionally, a written availability of Crystal Palace. Satchwell was probably a Stationer and framer who was licensed to sell Steven’s work and produce his own labels too. Although not a rare Stevengraph picture, and extremely rare label and business history.
