Papier Mache Writing Slope

A victorian papier mache writing slope exhibiting the more unusual colouring of brown ground as opposed to the more common black variation. The detail is of a bird of paradise and a peacock as well as flowers and hanging vegetation. it is exquisitely decorated, and this in turn is offset with the appliction of mother of pearl. The combination gives contrast. The sides are similarly decorated. There is a matching escutcheon, covering a working lock with key. Inside is a pen compartment topped with mother of pearl button. The writing surface has been replaced. A beautiful decorative item that would enhance any room. Dated from 1870-1890, it is a delicately sized piece.
