Stevengraph of “HM Stanley” (STG 78). This very rare silk is of the famous explorer who, having been born in Wales, went to America in 1859, serving in the Confederate army and then the US Navy. He became a writer and traveled the world being best known for finding Livingstone. He became a lecturer and entered Parliament in 1895. He died in London on May 1904. In the Sprake/Darby reference. this Stevengraph has a 7 star rarity out of 7. One of the “Notables” set, in immaculate condition, it is on C2 type mount dating it to the 1887-98 period. The label is of the 23+27+2 type which further dates it to March or April 1888. The silk is excellent with wonderfully bright colours, and the mount is of a similar standard.
