“The Present Time – 60 Miles an Hour” (STG 194). Trains were a popular image for Stevens as they clearly sold well. These were produced after the York Exhibition from mid-August 1879, a Lord Howe engine with 2 carriages. This early example is on a Type B mount and there are others with varying colours of coaches and funnels. The Label is Type 5 and was used for less than a month! The picture exhibits quite excellent colourings and the mount is very good. A 2* rarity in the Sprake/Darby reference. However, the inclusion of the words – 60 Miles an Hour – makes this 194a version, but the brown to the funnel, and the front of the engine make it a 194. Has it faded? Well that is possible except the first migrant colour is red and that is still sharp. Also, black does not fade to brown, so it is likely this is a bit of a rarity, a variant.
